LPN to RN programs: Boost your nursing abilities

As a licensed practical nurse or LPN, you have some set limitations. Why not remove those boundaries by becoming a registered nurse or RN, opening the door to increased pay and opportunities in the workforce. Accredited online or on-campus programs can help you move from LPN to RN.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that both classroom instruction and supervised clinical experience are needed for nursing degrees. Coursework often includes anatomy, physiology, microbiology, chemistry, nutrition, nursing, psychology and other behavioral sciences.

LeaRN the difference

Registered nurse training programs vary in length and location; classes could be held online or at a college or technical school. Aspiring nurses are trained to teach patients and their families how to manage their illnesses, educate the public about warning signs of diseases, run health screening and immunization clinics, and establish care plans for their organizations. Common responsibilities for RNs are to treat patients, record medical histories and symptoms, and help with diagnostic testing.

With more 2.6 million jobs in the field, RNs make up the largest health care occupation. For 2010, the BLS reported a mean wage of $67,720 per year for RNs, compared to $41,360 for licensed practical and licensed vocational nurses. Pay could be slightly higher if you work for an employment service or general medical hospital, and slightly lower for home health care and private physicians' offices. Any work environment offers its own perks, so you just have to pick which ones are important to you.
